THE COLLEGE
Maharajas Technological
Institute (M T I)
Here is the place I've done my Diploma in Electronics Engineering. M.T.I has a special place in the history of Polytechnics in Kerala. As the Maharajas college of Eranakulam enjoys the position as the Queen of arts colleges, Maharajas Technological Institute have the same right as far as Polytechnics are concerned. There are so many reasons for that. First thing is, it is the oldest polytechnic in Kerala. (If anybody have objection please clarify it with technical education board). It has been established as Industrial Training Institute and upgraded as polytechnic in 1943. (These facts were given by one of our teachers who is very unhappy for the negligence of the concerned authorities about our golden jubilee celebrations.) Probably M.T.I is the first institution who haven't celebrate their golden jubilee (and may be the last). Its location (middle of Kerala) helps a lot for maintaining its prominence as almost every event has been taking place at our institute. Second chance Interview, centralized valuation, Inter-poly sports, Inter-Poly union election, Union meetings are only some examples.
M.T.I had three main branches of engineering from its inception to 1990. Electrical, Mechanical and Civil. In 1990 govt. started a new batch of Electronics Engineering. So we became the first bach of Electronics in M.T.I. First we were only 20 students and some more students transfered from other polytechnics made our strength to 25. M.T.I is located just opposite of the Thrissur Musium and Zoo. It is an old 3 story building and it was the Weapon factory of Sakthan Thampuran long ago. We can see the old parts of the Wooden Laith there. We have a men's hostel there and girls are staying in YWCA just near to the college. All batch had a nick name-which was given by themselves. In second year we were famous with our name Xplossive EL2. Third year we changed our name into ELITES EL3- means Eligible Loyal Intelligent Talented Engg. Students.
All branches have an
association which concentrated in some educational and cultural programs.
They conducted seminars, small one day trip to some factories etc.
We Electronics branch
established our association during our final year. Our founder secratary
is Shaji Cherian. We named our association as ELSA 93 (Electronics Students
Association).
I had understood that ragging is an art and it helps me a lot to overcome my introversion. We
all followed the royal ragging through our second and third years.
We are planning to buid
a site for MTI seperatley and we add more information and full history
of our college in it.
The first
batch of Electronics Engg. in MTI.
Elites is the abbreviation
of Eligible Loyal Intelligent Talented Engineering Students. In our college
every class had a nick name like, C1 the great, Royal M3 etc. Our class
had been famous as Elegant EL1 in first year and
X-plosive EL2 in second
year and the final as ELITES EL3. Since we were only 20 students in the beginning
we had a very good attachment to each other. We are the first batch of
Electronics in MTI. Till 1990 Electrical section was the super batch there,
and by then electronics had been taken over that status immediately, because
Electronics branch requires the maximum index marks. (maths + science).
Then it goes down Computer, Chemical, Instrument Technology, Automobile
and Electrical respectively. So Electronics and Electrical had a little
bit high index mark variation. In the year '90 Electronics needs a minimum
marks of 180 whereas Electrical needs 160. Naturally we got the "Budhijeevi"
image from the beginning of our college life itself. It was backfired as
all complex-carrier seniors had been found extra pleasure to teased us
during ragging times. We were sat down in Electrical class in first
year except for three of our Subjects and Labs. But next year we got a
special class room which was little bit away from the main complex, so
we were isolated from others most of the times. It helped us to cultivate
a strong intimacy among us. The next of our Windows was the side of the
YWCA where a lot of chicks were dwelled. Almost all intervals there was
a "Ganamella" and main song was this "akkare ikkare ninnallengine aasa
theerum........" This practice presented us two or three talented singers.
Haridas Mani T.S- The
teacher who influenced us than anybody:
From the starting of second year we had our new teacher Mr. Haridas Mani. He was not mere a teacher for us, he dominated our style of learning, living more than anybody. Everybody loved and respected him. We never found him in a dull mood. He nurtured a new culture among us, which hadn't been shrunken into the campus. In his advice we conducted a "Good Bye '91" party, which had been imitated by almost every other classes. He had been led us through our study tour in second year. He had a plan to form a Students Co-operative Society, which could handle Electronics repair as any other shops but had not been came into practical (as some staffs considered this as a good joke). He worked a lot to erase our batch caption from "most terrible and naughty boys led by seven criminal kids" to "a naughty batch led by seven terribly talented naughties". Final year he got a transfer to Kasargod as Head Of Department and as per his advice we didn't give him a formal send off. He said he didn't want a send off from our minds. He returned to MTI as powerful and innovative Head Of Department within two years. Now he is in Kunnamkullam Polytechnic.
Super Seven- The Supreme Council Of Elites:
From Left to Right
1)Sivakumar If U have any doubts about these faces U can double check with the passport.....(:-)....... |
This is the one and only
one (like pdc) powerful group of our class. All decision had to be passed
by them first. All other guys were accepted their sovereignty unanimously.
Some one or two guys might had some problems towards them-but there was
no way to express their unhappiness -because super seven was never hesitate
to show their Gundaism.
Other small group was
"Smelling Friends". They want to "KURUNGAL" or "PANCHARAYADI" with
girls for 24 hours. Oneday super
Seven had given awards to Supper Smeller and Smeller the junior. After
these awards presentation Smellers
met near the canteen and had taken a decision to destroy the coming 10
days study tour. If two or three guys were decided to refrain from
the tour it would have been a fiscal disaster to everybody of us. All should
have been participated to the tour to cut down the individual prize to
a standard value. The spies of the Super seven passed on the secret agenda
of Smellers and there had been an emergency meeting of Super seven in the
Central Hotels. Next day super seven announced the tour committee which included
the 5 smellers and two others. So it was their duty to conduct the tour
successfully and they done this with cent percentage marks.
The Great Strike for Lab and Teachers:
Since we are the first batch, we used to depends Women's Poly technic and LBS Labs for our practical. There had been no use for our waiting in front of our college authorities. We planned to react. A protest in front of the Technical Education Board Director had been decided during the chance interview days. ( The selection for the balance seats interview had been held on MTI every year, for all candidates in Kerala. So MTI had became a human sea with these students and their guardians for these three or four days.) On the time of our protest some political (students) leaders came and offered help to lead the strike. Actually we had a policy to made this strike a non-political one, so we refused their help. Then their tone of dialoge had changed into threat and they warned us that there must be an action against us as we were going to picket the big "DIRECTOR". Then all lighthearted elitians (who expect a bright future) had withdrawn and super seven with two others remained. We felt insulted and decided to use the maximum sound. This spirit gave us a new strength and Saji Varghese (KAADAN) started Mudhravaakyams (Slogans) in a thundering sound, all Mudhravakyams were new, beautyful and sympathetic. (Baghavathy Saraswathy was with us, because Kaadan was neither a KAVI nor any touch in arts) Next half an hour MTI had been vibrated with the roaring of nine wounded lions who had thrown their fist in the air and the interview was interrupted. Director came and asked about our problems, heard us very sympathetically and offered us a well-equipped lab within six months and told us all paper works were over, this was a usual beuorocratic delay. He also asked us to give him a petition signed by everybody. Again Sarawathy came and started Bharathanatyam on Kaadan's tounge. This time he chanted slogans, which full of love, affection and thanks to the director. Within four months we shifted to the new Electronics Complex with a full-filled lab with our instruments.
At the last of our college
days we conducted a social day. The then principal Mr. Upendhra Nath sir
said in the function that when he
took charge months ago he had been told that the most dangerous students
are the senior
Electronics students.
But, he added, he watched closely and figured out what had actually been
happened to us.
The most of the hours
are free for us. If there were much free time for teenage guys they would
definitely indulge in some activities which cause harm to others. So his
first order to appointed some extra guest lectures for us. And, he concluded,
he was in right way in that and those last 6 months there was no complaint
about us from either other students or staff. We all kept our head high
then (because we invited electrical staff also), but his next words put
our heads down again- he was going to bet with other teachers (who never
liked us) for us that we would make a cent percentage result in the coming
final year exam.
We had returned our sincere
gratitude as a gift to Upendhranathan sir who was dare to bet for a group of naughty
students by made a cent percentage result , all with firstclasses, The first
time in the history of Maharajas.
